PARENT VOLUNTEER POLICY 2017-2018
At Richard Merkin Middle School, parents are needed to take active and
meaningful roles to ensure the success of our school. Research shows that parent involvement in children’s learning positively impacts student achievement levels. We believe that your participation at Richard Merkin Middle School will really make a difference and will positively impact your child’s academic progress. We encourage all parents, legal guardians and adult family members to become actively involved at Richard Merkin Middle School by serving as a parent volunteer. Your time, talent and enthusiasm are an integral part of the day-to-day functioning of the school and the overall academic development of your child. There are a number of ways you can volunteer and demonstrate your commitment at Richard Merkin Middle School. Parent volunteer hours can be earned by directly supporting the school and by supporting your child academically.
SCHOOL SUPPORT
Possible volunteer opportunities to support our school include:
●Office Support
●Fundraising Activities
●Breakfast and Lunch distribution
●Field Trip Assistance and Supervision
●Special Events Assistance
●Arrival Supervision morning (Valet)
●Yard or Visitor’s Supervision
●Making phone calls
●Translation for Parents Conferences
LEADERSHIP ACTIVITIES:
. Serving as the parents representative for your child’s Advisory Class
●Participation in the School Coordinating Council
●Town Hall Meetings
●Board of Directors Meetings
●Participation in other school committees and advocacy activities
. Educating other parents (Parent Leadership Academy PLN)
ACADEMIC SUPPORT
Possible volunteer activities to support your child academically include:
●Parent Workshop participation
●Classroom Observations
●Parent-Teacher Conferences
●Classroom Support
●Tutoring Support
●For Off-Campus Events
●Coffee W/the Principal
●Bring Lunch to Your Kid
●School Beautification
If you would like to volunteer now for specific opportunities, please contact
the school to be placed on the parent volunteer schedule.
We truly appreciate your participation as a parent volunteer and we will make every attempt to match your interests and skill with projects or tasks that you are comfortable with.

PARENT VOLUNTEER GUIDELINES
PARENT VOLUNTEER COMMITMENT 40 HOURS
●Each family is encouraged to volunteer 40 hours per school year. It is
suggested that 20 hours be applied to supporting the school and 20
hours be applied on Town-Hall and Workshops.
TO SUPPORT TO ATTENDING YOUR CHILD ACADEMICALLY
●Only parents, stepparents or legal guardians will be credited with
volunteer hours, family members (21 years and older) who reside in the same household.
●All volunteer hours should be fulfilled prior to the last day of school.
VOLUNTEERING AT THE SCHOOL
●The school will monitor the number of volunteer hours each family
accumulates
●All volunteers must sign in and sign out the front office
●All parent volunteer will receive a name badge and/or a Yellow Parent Volunteer vest
●Please respect classroom activities and the privacy of faculty and staff
when volunteering
● Please do not engage your child’s teacher in personal matters, instead schedule regular conferences though the year

during the school year.
● Provide proof of Negative Tuberculosis TB skin test or
